I have been told by family that the Butts Wynd had been named for a doctor of King Henry VIII,also for a lawyer of the same period.
Was the doctor a proctologist?
Saw and photographed this sign two weeks ago. It is very near the Northpoint Café, “where Kate met Wills” for coffee.
Well, Mary, one would hope THEIR butts didn’t give off wynd at the time.
It’s called Butts Wynd because it is an alleyway (wynd) that leads to a spot which was an archery practice field in medieval times. Those big stuffed targets that archers use for practice are called “butts.” The archery “butts” were at the end of the “wynd.”
